Centre Charities 2018

Mike Flanagan, Centre Manager, is pleased to announce that Spindles Town Square Shopping Centre will be continuing their partnership with Dr. Kershaw’s and Maggie’s Oldham throughout 2018.

In 2017, Spindles Town Square Shopping Centre supported both charities in a number of ways:-

  • Two computers were donated to Maggie’s Oldham to provide vital access to on-line support for their visitors
  • A donation was made towards the “Shedquarters” project at Dr Kershaw’s hospice.
  • Donations for both charities were collected throughout the year during the Kids Club sessions and over the Christmas months, any donations to the wishing wells in the Snowman feature were split between the two organisations.
  • Banners were located in the Centre, to raise awareness of both charities
  • Both organisations took part in the Charity Awareness Days, organised throughout the year.

Various events and updates will take place throughout 2018 and more information can be found on the Centre’s website www.spindlestownsquare.com or by clicking on the links to the charity websites Dr Kershaw’s Hospice and Maggie’s Oldham

Local charity turn VIPs for the day to launch new store

Friday 16 February 9am will see the long awaited opening of the brand new B&M Oldham store, in Spindles Shopping Centre.

The new colleagues were asked to nominate a local charity they think truly deserves some VIP treatment for the work they do for the local community. They chose Dr Kershaw’s Hospice who will be taking centre stage as they officially unveil the new B&M store, alongside the local Mayor, Cllr Shadab Qumer.

The charity aims to help people within the local community living with life-limiting illnesses by providing a range of services tailored to their needs. They also support the family and dependents of patients who need bereavement support after their loved one has passed away.
In addition to opening the new store, the representatives also received £250 worth of B&M vouchers as a thank you for taking part and for all their hard work in the local community.

The store manager, Lissa Berry, said: “The team from Dr Kershaw’s Hospice really stood out for us as they go the extra mile for local community, we wanted to give them some VIP treatment as a thank you for all the hard work they do.
“We hope that our donation can help them to continue the great work they do.”
She also commented: “The new team have been working really hard to get the store ready for opening day and we can’t wait to get the doors open Friday and show customers their new B&M Oldham.”

The top half of the former BHS store has undergone an internal and external refurbishment programme and created 25 jobs for local people.

B&M is one of the UK’s fastest growing retailers and customers can expect to find a wide variety of branded products including toys, food & drink, home ware, pet products, health & beauty and seasonal range.

Players in Spindles signing session Date published: Thursday, January 26, 2017

ROARY, Oldham RL Club’s popular mascot, will again be at the centre of the club’s continued partnership with Spindles Town Square Shopping Centre in the coming season. The Roughyeds squad will meet and greet shoppers at a signing session in the Centre’s upper mall between 11.30am and 12.30pm on Saturday week, February 4, the day before they kick off their Kingstone Press Championship campaign against Sheffield Eagles at Bower Fold, Stalybridge.

“We are delighted to renew one of our longest partnerships,” said club chairman Chris Hamilton. “By sponsoring Roary, Spindles Town Square Shopping continue to support the club in a way that is beneficial to both parties. “This year we hope to do even more with Spindles, in terms of player appearances, than we have in the past.”

Mike Flanagan, manager of the Shopping Centre, said: “We’ve been partners with Oldham RL Club for about ten years and we are happy to continue our sponsorship. “By working with the club again we are striving to extend our links with the community we both serve.”

Roary, or 20-year-old Nathan Murgatroyd, is recognised by club officials as a great ambassador for the Roughyeds and for rugby league. He’s been club mascot for five years and he loves the job, especially when interacting with supporters. Said Nathan: “I’ll be proud to wear the Spindles logo again — and I’m hopeful we’ll have a good season. You can’t read much into pre-season results. We’ve had injuries and that’s going to change. “I know a lot of fans personally and I love interacting with them. Loads of them want to be photographed with Roary. Children love him. “We have to comply with Rugby Football League regulations which are designed to bring both sets of fans together. I work hard on that aspect of the job.”

At half-time at Bradford last season, he was seen dancing with the Bulls cheer leaders — and he missed the match-clinching try at Hull KR, when Oldham pulled off one of the biggest Challenge Cup shocks of all time, because he was busy entertaining a young, wheelchair-bound Rovers fan, who was more interested in Roary than in the game.
